Judicial Watch Wins Motion in SB 1070 Lawsuit!

This week, let’s start with a big Judicial Watch victory.

On Wednesday, April 5, our client, the Arizona State Legislature, was granted permission to intervene as a defendant in the Obama Department of Justice (DOJ) lawsuit against SB 1070, Arizona’s get-tough illegal immigration law. Judge Susan Bolton granted Judicial Watch’s motion over the objections of the Obama DOJ. Here’s a quick squib from the order, which was short and sweet:

On February 7, 2011, Arizona Governor Janice K. Brewer signed into law Senate Bill 1117 (“S.B. 1117”), which provides that “the Speaker of the House of Representatives and the President of the Senate may direct counsel to initiate a legal proceeding or appear on behalf of their respective chambers or on behalf of the Legislature in any challenge in a state or federal court” to S.B. 1070. The Legislature now seeks permission of the Court to intervene as a Defendant in this action…permitting the Legislature to intervene at this time will not unduly delay or prejudice the original parties…the Court in its discretion finds that the Legislature should be permitted to intervene as Defendant at this time.

As the deadline for a government slowdown approaches, liberals are leading the charge to blame the budget impasse on the Tea Party movement.

This progressive political strategy serves a two-fold objective. First, by assigning responsibility for the failing budget negotiations on the Tea Party, liberals hope to avoid any culpability in the morass. Second, if there is a government slowdown, they want any public hardships blamed on anyone but themselves.

After years of trying to label the Tea Party movement as extremist, liberals now hope that shuttered museums, national park closures and concerns about grandma not getting her Social Security check next month, will turn public opinion against the social movement responsible for ending liberals’ virtual monopoly on political power in Washington.

TEA PARTY SUES TO ENSURE EQUAL ACCESS TO SCHOOL FACILITIES

Mansfield, OH (April 6, 2011) – In a lawsuit filed yesterday in federal court, the Mansfield North Central Ohio Tea Party Association claims that the Mansfield Board of Education and its superintendent violated the federal civil rights of the tea party and its members when they allowed opposition to a proposed speaker dictate a decision to deny the Tea Party the use of the high school auditorium.

Last Monday, on March 28, the Mansfield North Central Ohio Tea Party Association was scheduled to host a seminar by Usama Dakdok entitled “Freedom or Surrender” at the auditorium of the Mansfield Senior High School. Despite the fact that the auditorium is regularly made available to private organizations and the Tea Party had reserved the auditorium weeks in advance, on the morning of the scheduled event, Mansfield School Superintendent Dan Freund withdrew the previously granted permission to utilize the auditorium.

Troops in Iraq and Afghanistan have been out of the media spotlight for weeks as the media have been wholly focused on domestic issues. Even a casual attention to the news lately highlights a disturbing lull in reporting about our troops and their missions in Afghanistan as well as Iraq.

Last month troops in Iraq came to the aid of Iraqi police after Al Qaeda attacked a government building -- it was a huge reminder that Iraq remains a dangerous place and that the progress made there could still be derailed. Our troops are still doing a very important job in Iraq and they need our continued support, but this incident was barely reported by the media.

Russia wants 'red button' rights for US missile defence system

A top Kremlin official has told the United States Russia wants "red button" rights to a new US-backed missile defence system for Europe, a move that would allow it to influence the shield's day-to-day operational use.

Sergey Ivanov, Russia's deputy prime minister, made the controversial demand during a visit to the United States where he met with top officials including Hillary Clinton, the US Secretary of State.

"We insist on only one thing," he said of the nascent US-backed missile defence shield. "That we are an equal part of it."

Obama to speak on long-term deficit reduction

President Obama will give a speech this week that lays out his plan for handling the nation's fiscal management, White House senior advisor David Plouffe said Sunday.
"Later this week the president is going to speak about his approach to long-term deficit reduction," Plouffe said on CNN's "State of the Union."
"He's going to be clear about the type of deficit reduction we need in terms of dollar amounts, over what period of years," Plouffe said.
The White House advisor did not offer specifics of the president's plan, but he said that all options were on the table.
"Obviously you've got to look everywhere; it's got to be a balanced approach. Every corner of the federal government has to be looked at here," he said.
