States raise record number of immigration bills in 2011
In January 2011 alone, more than 600 immigration bills seeking to limit the rights of illegal immigrants have been filed by state lawmakers. Last year, 1,400 bills were introduced but only 131 resolutions were adopted. For every SB 1070, there are many more bills that get introduced but don’t have the political momentum to make their way through committee and hearing and onto the floor. Many states aren’t even willing to put forward tougher immigration bills because of the inevitability of facing costly lawsuits. We have to let states know that illegal immigration is still a priority, just as the economy is, for Americans everywhere. Without our help, states might not realize they already have the momentum they need to pass and enforce tougher illegal immigration laws. |
California legislator files Arizona-style immigration bill
Assemblyman Tim Donnelly, R-Twin Peaks, would make it a crime in California to be in the country illegally in a bill he proposed that is similar to Arizona’s SB 1070. This bill would end “sanctuary cities” and require all employers to use E-Verify, a free, federal program that is Internet-based and allows employers to check the eligibility of potential employees to work in the U.S. It also would make it a misdemeanor to be in the country illegally and increase the penalty for those convicted of human-trafficking into California for the purpose of sex slavery. |
Number of illegal immigrants holding steady
According to a new estimate by the Pew Hispanic Center, the two-year decline in the number of illegal immigrants in the U.S. because of the recession has halted. As of March 2010, 11.2 million undocumented immigrants lived in the U.S. down from 12 million illegal immigrants in the U.S. in 2007. However, the newest number suggests that the number of new unauthorized immigrants entering the country is balanced by those leaving. Clearly, the only silver-lining in the current economic situation is the decline in the immigrant population, but experts say to expect larger numbers of illegal immigrants as the economy rebounds. |
Do We Want Obama to “Reorganize the Federal Government”? By Ben Johnson, FloydReports.com |
As Egyptians half a world away ponder what kind of government they want to live under, Americans must also ask themselves the same question in the wake of Barack Obama’s latest State of the Union Address. Although his salmon joke got a few (undeserved) laughs, few commented that it came just after President Obama “proposed a “major reorganization of the government.” Although he promised to make America “more competitive,” he provided astoundingly few details about what this would look like. So, Americans must ask ourselves: Do we really want to see a major restructuring of the government under Barack Obama? |
Mr. Daniels adds that the lack of a right-to-work law "does hold us back economically. There is no doubt about it." He estimates that when competing with Southern states for businesses, "a very large number—perhaps as many as a quarter—of the deals we don't get a shot at are for just this reason."The full editorial is worth reading, and it's an excellent reminder to all the liberty activists who worked so hard during the election season that the fight is far from over.
This damage has motivated Indiana Republicans, who now control both legislature chambers, to announce that they want to pass a right-to-work law. Unions immediately went to Defcon 1, Democrats are up in arms, and Republicans could yet buckle under this union pressure. Even Mr. Daniels, who has stood up to union opposition in the past, seems hesitant. He told the Indianapolis Star that right to work "may be worth a look," but he added it "is not on my agenda." He's worried that the issue so antagonizes unions that it could derail the rest of his legislative agenda.
We hope Republicans don't flinch. Right-to-work laws make states more economically competitive, but the bigger issue is about individual rights. Workers should have the right to join a union but also the right not to. Indiana and other states with new Republican majorities have a rare opportunity to pass a major reform that will reduce union power, help to attract new jobs, and liberate workers from union coercion.
Impeachment could be appropriate if you believe Zero is president, but is he? If he is not a natural born citizen, then that is a problem. I think the way Obama will pay for this is not by being dealt with by our law. I believe the worst thing that could happen to Obama right now is for Mubarak to hang tough and not go as commanded by the man who would be president of the world. It is totally inappropriate for him to demand the resignation of a faithful ally of the US. Don Hank |
"The danger to America is not Barack Obama but a citizenry capable of entrusting a man like him with the Presidency. It will be far easier to limit and undo the follies of an Obama presidency than to restore the necessary common sense and good judgment to a depraved electorate willing to have such a man for their president. The problem is much deeper and far more serious than Mr. Obama, who is a mere symptom of what ails America. Blaming the prince of the fools should not blind anyone to the vast confederacy of fools that made him their prince. The Republic can survive a Barack Obama, who is, after all, merely a fool. It is less likely to survive a multitude of fools such as those who made him their president." - Czech Republic
